Law Firm Planning for the New Year

Now that 2022 is in the books, you are probably looking forward to the new possibilities that 2023 will bring. Here are some areas to focus on to make this new year as productive and profitable as possible.

Getting Organized and Starting Fresh

For most of us, being organized and having a clean slate helps us be more productive. Now is an excellent time to tie up loose ends from 2022 and get things in order for 2023. Review any open matters and cases you have and decide whether they should be closed, referred to another attorney, or remain open.

This is a good time of the year to find outstanding balances and send out invoices to collect due and overdue payments. Check in with your staff members to see if they have things that need to be wrapped up. Making sure the whole team is caught up, organized, and ready to move forward will help transition to the new year.

Talent Management and Culture

The beginning of the year is a good time to evaluate how your team is functioning and if there are any areas for improvement. Do you need to recruit new people? Do you need to let someone go? Find out how your staff members are doing and if they have any ideas for enhancements for the firm.

Cybersecurity

It only takes one cybersecurity incident to ruin a law firm’s reputation. Assessing your law firm’s cybersecurity at least once each year is crucial to protecting your law firm’s data and reputation. Here are some things you can do to help strengthen your cybersecurity:

  • Make sure you and your staff members are using strong passwords.
  • Regularly update permissions.
  • Establish a mitigation plan in case there is a security breach to avoid business interruption.
  • Keep software updated manually or through automation.
  • Maintain compliance with government regulations.

Hiring an IT company to manage your computer network and cybersecurity systems will take these things off your plate and should ensure that you are compliant with regulations and that your data is as secure as possible.

Streamline and Automate

Streamlining and automating your client intake, billing, and payment processes will give your clients a more efficient experience and remove a burden from your staff members.

Client-centric Approach

Consider how your clients’ matters or cases move through your law firm’s system. Are there any ways to improve the client experience? Is your firm providing clear communication with your clients? Remember that the better the client experience, the happier your clients will be and the more likely they are to refer new clients.

Networking

While a client-centric approach will boost referrals and potential clients, you still need to put yourself out into the community to drum up more prospects. Find ways to meet with other lawyers, professionals, and potential clients by volunteering in your community. For example, you could join the board of a local business or organization. You can also teach workshops and speak at seminars. Use your email campaigns and newsletters to stay connected with referrals and prospects, and let them know about upcoming events.

Online Presence

Having a solid online presence will help your law practice stand out from the crowd. Even if a potential client is referred to you by someone they know, they are still likely to view your website before contacting you. Make sure your website is updated regularly and is easy to navigate and use. Regularly posting informative material will educate your audience and show them that you are an expert in your area of law.
